Faculty of Social Sciences offers study programmes within archivistics, library and information science, journalism and media studies, social work, social policy and child welfare, public management and business.

The faculty has about 4200 students and nearly 280 members of staff.

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies has approximately 450 students and 30 employees. Study programmes and research are closely connected and exhibit our international profile.

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences (SAM) OsloMet has a vacancy for two temporary PhD Research Fellows. The positions are connected to the PhD programme at Department of Journalism and Media Studies 

 

The department of Journalism and Media Studies is looking for candidates with an interest in and the potential to contribute to the development of research on journalism media production, and communication.

 

Area of research

 

Applicants should have research interests that resonate with ongoing research and educational activities at the department. Through their application letter and project proposal, candidates are expected to demonstrate how they will contribute to the enhancement of one or more of the following research areas:

 

  • artificial intelligence in the media sector
  • journalism and media in war and conflict
  • press freedom and safety of journalism
  • «big tech» and platform power
  • media industries and production
  • digital journalism
  • polarization
  • media narration across text, image and sound
  • science journalism and climate/environmental journalism and communication
  • media practices, audience relations and transformations
  • the development of research methodology and/or relevant skills related to journalism and media studies

 

The appointments are for a period of 3 years, in special cases a 4 year’s period with 25% teaching and administrative duties may be negotiated. PhD Research Fellows must be admitted by the Faculty of Social Sciences' PhD programme and will benefit from the faculty’s organized research training.

 

The successful fellow is expected to pursue independent research under supervision, based on the project proposal. The position requires participation in the Faculty of Social Sciences' organised research education programme (PhD programme). 

 

Project proposal

 

The project proposal must consist of a maximum of 10 pages, positioning your project, and giving a description of your planned research. The research proposal will be an important part of the assessment and must demonstrate how the project will lead to a doctoral degree within the designated period.

Qualification requirements

 

We are looking for applicants who have:  

  •  A Master’s degree in Journalism, Media Studies or a media/journalism focus within another relevant field (120 ECTS). You must have completed a master's degree of 120 ECTS in Journalism and Media Studies, and/or fields relevant to the specialisations in the PhD programme.
  • A completed master's degree of 90 ECTS may be considered as a basis for admission if your master's degree contains an independent work with a master's thesis of at least 30 ECTS. In addition, one of the following three criteria must be met: 
    • Advanced methodological knowledge in the form of completed master's course or documented exam in methods / theory of science at master's level
    •  A Scientific article assumed in a peer-reviewed journal and/or book article in a peer-reviewed book
    • Relevant research experience
  • A grade B or better on the master´s thesis and an average grade B or better for the master´s degree.
  • Strong research interest in one or more of the above research areas
  • Very good analytical skills Proficiency in both written and spoken English. A good command of a Scandinavian language is an advantage but not a requirement

 

In addition, experience from research projects and publishing in academic journals will be an advantage. The applicants will also be assessed on the project’s quality, research timeliness, innovation, academic relevance to the academic environment at the department and affiliation to academic networks outside the department. 

 

Admission to the Faculty of Social Sciences’ doctoral programme is a prerequisite and a final project plan for the fellowship period is required completed and acknowledged within 3 months after accession.

  • Cover letter including a full statement of motivation
  • Project description: maximum 10 pages. The project description must be written in English or a Scandinavian language.
  • CV, references and all pages of certificates/diplomas. The certificates/diplomas must include ECTS grades (A–F). Foreign diplomas must be translated into English by the degree-conferring institution. Education taken abroad should preferably be recognised in advance by NOKUT, and a confirmed copy of the letter of recognition should be enclosed.
  • Your master's degree/second degree thesis (and any other scholarly work that you wish the expert committee to take into consideration) and a list of your publications, if relevant

 

You must upload all of these documents. Original documents and valid passport must be presented if you are invited for an interview. OsloMet performs document inspections in order to give you as a candidate a proper evaluation and ensure fair competition.

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, job title and position code. State salary wage scale 1017 Research Fellow, NOK 550 800 per year
