Post-Doctoral Fellowship Position in Socio-Legal Studies - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Faculty of Education and International Studies announces one post-doctoral fellowship position in socio-legal studies affiliated with Riverine Rights research project in the Section for International Development in the Department of International Studies and Interpreting.

The position is linked to the project Riverine Rights – Exploring the Currents and Consequences of Legal Innovations on the Rights of Rivers, which is financed by the FRIPRO Programme of the Norwegian Research Council (please see https://uni.oslomet.no/riverrights/). The project investigates cases from New Zealand, Colombia and India where rivers have been granted legal personhood, and the implications of these cases.

The position is fully funded for three years, available as soon as possible.

Applicants must submit a project proposal with the application, outlining the main objective, the background for the proposed project, theoretical framework, research question(s) and expected finding, and methods. The project description must be in written in English.

Tasks and responsibilities

The post-doctoral fellow will be a full member of the project team Riverine Rights and will

• Carry out research on international dimensions of the rights of rivers, to complement the project’s three country case studies. (This could for instance be on cases of legal personhood for nature or river rights in other countries, or on the global movement for the development and spread of ideas and norms related to the Rights of Rivers/Rights of Nature and legal personhood.)
• Contribute to the overall implementation of the research project
• Submit project research to academic publications, and communicate research to the general public
• Participate in research collaboration with national and international partners

There is a possibility that the position might be extended to four years, with the additional year dedicated to teaching. In that case, tasks will also include:

• Teaching and supervision in international development studies at BA and MA levels

Required qualifications and terms:

• Ph.D. or equivalent degree
• Disciplinary background in the social sciences (understood to include also relevant approaches from law or philosophy)
• Relevant research experience
• Ability to communicate well in English, both verbally and in written form.
• A strong record of academic publication (relative to time after initiating PhD research)
• Experience with dissemination of research findings

When assessing and ranking the qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on:

• Experience of studying socio-legal issues i.e. issues intersecting law and society
• Specialization in one or more of the following inter-disciplinary fields: environmental governance, environmental law, resource conflicts, indigenous rights, social theory on nature-society relationships and post-humanist theory, or other issues central to the project
• The scientific quality of the project proposal, including originality and potential
• The relevance of the project to the Riverine Rights project
• Attached scientific work
• Other relevant publications
• Experience from previous research activities and project participation
• Personal qualities that can contribute positively to the working environment
• Proven ability to work independently and within a research team.
• Experience with national and international research collaboration
• Strong language skills in relevant languages
• Teaching experience at the college and university level can be an asset

The position is remunerated in accordance with the Basic Collective Agreement for the Civil Service and OsloMets salary policy 1352 Postdoc. The salary is NOK 523.200 – 682 200 per year, depending on level of competence / length of service.

Expert evaluation:
