OsloMet - storbyuniversitetet

Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway's third largest university with almost 22,000 students and over 2,500 employees. We have campuses in central Oslo and at Romerike. OsloMet educates students and conducts research that contributes to the sustainability of the Norwegian welfare state and the metropolitan region.

The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD) offers higher education and research and development (R&D) activities within technical subjects, arts and design. The Faculty has approximately 4.000 students and 400 staff members and is situated at Pilestredet Campus in downtown Oslo and at Kjeller Campus in Viken.

The Department of Built Environment offers bachelors and master’s degree programs in engineering, in addition to research and development activities. The department has approximately 60 staff members and 850 students.

You can find more information about the department here.

There are currently several active research groups at the Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology. The Department is actively involved in the PhD program in Engineering Science. The PhD-program at TKD has a multidisciplinary profile and offers a variety of topics within engineering science. The program is a collaboration with the research center on digital engineering: SimulaMet. TKD is an important contributor to OsloMet’s strategic goal of being a leading provider of research and education for solving the big challenges for society - today and in the future.

Area of research

The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design currently has an opening for a PhD position at the Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology, in the area of smart and advanced materials. Smart cities, buildings and structures is a strategic research area for the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design. Smart structures represent a novel engineering approach that not only improves the safety of structures, but also provides valuable opportunities to increase their service life and decrease their environmental impact. One focus area of the Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology within this field is smart materials. Smart materials can be defined as highly engineered materials that respond intelligently to their environment as well as being sensible and interactive. On a broader level one can include advanced engineered materials that are optimized for its purpose. In this context we will consider smart materials that are employed in the field of structural engineering. This can involve the study of unconventional materials such as shape memory alloys like self-sensing concrete and smart skins, but also engineered or functionally graded materials or even 3D printed/additive manufactured materials. The potential of using finite element modeling and material modeling together with artificial intelligence and machine learning methods will be investigated. Using reality gap and data mining algorithms, we can develop a fundamental understanding of the behavior of the smart or advanced materials using real and virtual laboratory tests.

The main supervisor will be Professor Aase Reyes, Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology.
