The Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) has approximately 550 employees and 7000 students and is located in Oslo and Akershus. The Faculty is comprised of four departments as well as the National Centre of Multicultural Education (NAFO). The Faculty educates tomorrow’s teachers from kindergarten through upper secondary school, in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Faculty offers a PhD in Education. In addition, the Faculty offers development studies and studies in sign language and interpreting. Diversity is a core value for the Faculty and its activities. The Faculty’s research and development focuses on practical training and is both profession-oriented and internationally oriented.

The Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education (GFU) has strong research communities within the field of school subjects, educational science, and digital competence, and educates teachers for the Norwegian school system in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Department offers studies on bachelor and master level, and contributes to the general development of skills for school employees through continuing and further education.

There is a vacant, permanent full-time position as Professor of Mathematics Education at the Department of Primary- and Secondary Teacher Education at the Faculty of Education and International Studies from 1. August 2021.       

The position advertised is included in the mathematics section, which currently has approx. 35 members, whose areas of on-going research include knowledge for teaching mathematics, inclusive mathematics education, beginning mathematics education, assessment, algebraic thinking, proof and argument. Many of the members of the section are participants in the OsloMet research and development group “Task Design in Mathematics”.  The section covers the teaching of mathematics in all courses offered by the department, enjoys fine interpersonal relations and offers a good working environment.

Duties:

  • Initiate and carry out research and development work. The profile of the faculty is teacher education, so profession-oriented research and development work is emphasised. It is important that the appointed candidate is willing to focus on research that is relevant to professional practice.
  • be a driving force in the development and management of major research projects and applications for external funding
  • initiate and further develop research collaboration with national and international partners
  • play a key role in the further development of the expert committee and the department’s study programmes
  • teach and supervise at the bachelor's, master’s, and, if relevant, Ph.D. levels, as well as in continuing and further education programmes
  • follow up students in practical training
  • disseminate research results to the international academic community and society in general
  • actively contribute to the development of high-quality education
  • carry out academic administrative tasks

Required qualifications:

  • professor qualifications in Mathematics/Mathematics Education
  • The applicant must be able to document relevant educational theory and practice. Applicants who are unable to document basic teaching qualifications upon appointment, must acquire these qualifications within two years. Oslo Metropolitan University offers a course on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (UHPED) in English and in collaboration with the University of Oslo, that meets this requirement.
  • Proficiency in oral and written English is required. Applicants who do not have adequate proficiency in a Scandinavian language must acquire Norwegian skills corresponding to at least level B2 within three years of starting in the position.
  • If there are no qualified applicants, we may consider an appointment to a temporary position as (Professor) on the condition that the appointee qualifies for a permanent position within three years.

In the assessment and ranking of qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on:

  • Extensive research and development work of relevance to the position. Emphasis will be placed on publications from the past six years.
  • experience with research networks and project management involving external funding
  • experience with teaching and supervision at the bachelor’s, master’s, and, if relevant, Ph.D. levels
  • knowledge and/or experience of mathematics education; in particular, beginning mathematics education, algorithmic thinking and/or programming
  • knowledge and/or experience of teaching in school or teacher education
  • teaching skills
  • experience with academic management
  • digital proficiency, including experience with student-active and digital learning tools
  • the ability to communicate and collaborate with students and colleagues
  • personal qualities that can contribute positively to the working environment
  • Good oral and written presentation skills in a Scandinavian language and English. Applicants whose first language is not one of the Scandinavian languages, must document both oral and written language skills.

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for state employees: The annual salary for professor (code 1013) is from NOK 704 900 to NOK 906 000. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A contribution of 2% to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
