The Department of Archivistics, Library and Information Science currently has available one PhD fellow 3-year fixed-term position affiliated with the PhD program in Library and Information Science. The position is associated with the research project Political Dynamics in the Culture Sector (POLYCUL) funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Archivistics, Library and Information Science (OsloMet), the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (OsloMet), the Department of Art, Design and Drama (OsloMet), the Norwegian Academy of Music, University of Borås (Sweden), Lund University (Sweden) and Åbo Akademi University (Finland).
The POLYCUL project puts the spotlight on the struggles for financial and symbolic support from public authorities to actors in the culture sector in the Nordic countries. We are interested in how these struggles are asserted among actors in the sector, in the patterns the struggles assume, and in the outcomes they have in the culture sector - what we in the project refer to as political dynamics. One goal of the project is to develop our understanding of the political dynamics in different parts of the culture sector, and the consequences these have for the distribution of resources between actors in the sector. Another goal is to develop our understanding of how these political dynamics affect the possibilities for achieving changes in cultural policy. Empirically, the project will approach these issues through studies of relations between political and administrative decision-makers and actors in the sector, and through studies of political processes where the interests of culture sector actors are put into play. Project participants will study the regional reform in the Norwegian culture sector, political processes related to questions about book laws and e-books, the trend of investments in houses of culture and political processes related to private donations to culture organizations. The PhD project should be an empirical project that relates to the overall theme for POLYCUL. The PhD research fellow will be part of a team of senior researchers and another PhD fellow to achieve the overall goals of the project.
Applicants must prepare a project proposal of relevance to the overall goals of the POLYCUL project. The successful applicant will be an integrated member of the POLYCUL research team and the research group Information and Society (INFOSAM) at the Department of Archivistics, Library and Information Science, at the Faculty of Social Sciences at OsloMet.
The PhD fellowship period is three years without teaching obligation.
