The Department of Journalism and Media Studies offers a 3-year full-time postdoctoral fellowship. The position is linked to the international research project Understanding Youth Participation and Media literacy in Digital Dialogue Spaces (U-YouPa), which is financed by The Norwegian Research Council.

The candidate will also be a member of the research group INDEX.

The research project U-YouPa

A point of departure for the U-YouPa project is that young people have largely withdrawn from traditional forms of democratic participation. They are still keen to engage in democratic life, but they ask for more and different public spaces of participation. A goal of the project is to provide an understanding of the interconnection between cultural and technological preconditions for strengthening youth participation in digital media spaces, thus meeting fundamental challenges of inclusion currently emerging in European countries.

Key research questions are:

  • How do existing participatory media formats used by young people meet the challenges of media literacy, diversity, intercultural dialogue and inclusion in European nations?
  • What and how can young people contribute to recommendations foracquiring media literacy that would advance creativity and inclusiveness among youth with different sociocultural backgrounds?

The project will:

  • develop methods, concepts and empirical knowledge that contribute to increased understanding of the potential participatory media spaces for intercultural dialogue among young people
  • analyze current varieties in young people`s involvement on cultural and political media platforms, and explore innovative frameworks for stimulating their contributions to developing an (inter)culturally reflective and inclusive media literacy
  • create a knowledge-based ethical framework for technology design supporting inclusive dialogues in digital media spaces

An innovative research design will involve young people with different sociocultural backgrounds in different phases of the research. They will participate in data gathering, interpretation of findings and the creation of ethical recommendations and rules that enable and encourage intercultural dialogue. By applying this research design, we seek to gain a deep understanding of how technology is interwoven in daily activities of young people. We particularly focus on political and intercultural dialogue activities; what activities they initiate, observe and/or participate in.

We expect that the research design will contribute significantly to knowledge about digital media ethics, and an understanding of what capacities facilitate intercultural dialogue.
