PhD Fellowship within the topic “The effects of digital transformations on the Digital Generation (DigiGen)”

The Faculty of Education and International Studies announces one scholarship affiliated with the research project: The Impact of Technological Transformations on the Digital Generation (DigiGen). The project is funded through the EU Horizon 2020 program and is coordinated by the Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI), Oslo Metropolitan University. The interdisciplinary project team includes researchers from a total of nine European countries. The start date for the position is September 1st, 2021. The announced position will be placed in the Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education at the Pilestredet campus. The PhD scholarship is also affiliated with the research group, Digital Learning Arenas.

Area of research

The DigiGen project will generate new knowledge about how children and young people use and are affected by the technological transformations in their everyday lives. This will include a focus on education, the home, leisure time and children and young people’s civic participation. The project aims to achieve this by explaining the conditions under which harmful versus beneficial effects occur when children and young people use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This will be achieved by using participatory methodologies that include children and young people as co-researchers. Through the use of participatory methodologies the project focuses on understanding why and how some children and young people benefit from ICT use while others seem to be impacted negatively. We are looking for highly motivated candidates who take an interest in developing research competencies focusing on two-three of the following topics:

• Understanding how ICT influences children and young people’s lives and how they interact with technology in their everyday lives
• How students in different age groups (lower and upper secondary) rate and assess the value of digital technology/digital competence in their education as a preparation for adult life, and for developing their own way of living and working in the digital age
• Identifying what children and young people at different educational levels (lower and upper secondary education) consider as threats (risks) in terms of their own ICT use and how schools can address these threats
• How different learners experience and benefit, or are excluded from, digitally enhanced learning (e.g. male and female students, students of an immigrant background, students with disabilities, urban and rural population)
• Analyse the changes in the role of teachers, teacher educators and school leaders (e.g. rector, head teachers, school inspectors) in the digital transition in education and their continuous professional development needs
• How can teachers and teacher educators be actively involved in shaping and co-designing education and digital tools and how can teacher education institutions be supported in innovating their programmes for pre-service teachers in order to foster professional digital competence and ICT self-efficacy.
