A 3-year PhD fellowship position is available at Oslo Business School, Oslo Metropolitan University. The position is associated with the research project “Darkness on the horizon? Exploring the response to contestation of trade policy in
Europe “(TradeCont), funded by the Research Council Norway (UTENRIKS-program). TradeCont is led by Associate Professor Guri Rosén. The PhD-candidate will be formally admitted to the doctoral program in social work and social policy at OsloMet.
The aim of TradeCont is to investigate whether and how efforts to compensate losers of globalization are likely to succeed and whether politicians think that compensatory policies is the right strategy to counter opposition to free trade. In response to increasing conflict over trade policy, recent appeals for inclusive growth call for compensatory measures boost support for further economic openness. TradeCont will examine the effect of compensatory politics through public opinion surveys, and study party manifestos to see whether and how politicians suggest compensatory measures in response to the contestation of trade. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the data collection of the project, as well as pursue an independent project relevant to TradeCont. More detailed information about the project can be acquired by contacting the project manager.
All applicants should provide a project proposal (in English or Norwegian) consisting of 6-8 pages, giving a detailed description of their planned research. Priority will be given to proposals focusing on the relationship between globalisation and the welfare state (over time, cross-country), attitudes towards trade and globalisation, or party politics of the welfare state in a global context. The research proposal will be an important part of the assessment, and must demonstrate how the project will lead to a doctoral degree within the designated three-year period. The project’s relevance to the doctoral programme in social work and social policy will also be taken into consideration.
The proposal should include the following elements:
