Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway's third largest university with almost 22,000 students and over 2,500 employees. We have campuses in central Oslo and at Romerike. OsloMet educates students and conducts research that contributes to the sustainability of the Norwegian welfare state and the metropolitan region.

The Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) has approximately 550 employees and 7000 students and is located in Oslo and Akershus. The Faculty is comprised of four departments as well as the National Centre of Multicultural Education (NAFO). The Faculty educates tomorrow’s teachers from kindergarten through upper secondary school, in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Faculty offers a PhD in Education. In addition, the Faculty offers development studies and studies in sign language and interpreting. Diversity is a core value for the Faculty and its activities. The Faculty’s research and development focuses on practical training and is both profession-oriented and internationally oriented.

The Department of Vocational Teacher Education (YLU) is the leading academic community for vocational pedagogy in Norway. We offer study programmes in vocational teacher education and vocational pedagogy, postgraduate certificate education for vocational teachers (PPU-Y) and driving instructor education. The department also offers continuing and further education and does considerable contract work. We have a broad focus on research and development and work in close cooperation with schools and workplaces.

The Faculty of Education and International Studies announces two scholarships within the fields mentioned above at the Department of Vocational Teacher Education. Area of research

The scholarship positions are 100% positions for three years, in which the goal is to complete the Ph.D. program and receive a Ph.D. The positions are available from 01.09.2023.

You can freely choose the subject of your project and which of the department’s research groups you want your project to be connected to. Qualifications and conditions

  • Successful applicants must have completed a master’s degree/second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with an academic background in science of education, teacher education, other educational theory and practice education, development studies or other education at an equivalent level.   • Successful applicants must have achieved a letter grade B or higher on their master’s degree/second degree thesis. Applicants without a letter grade from a previous degree must be able to document an equivalent academic result.
  • Applicants must have knowledge of the Norwegian Vocational Education system.
  • Admission to the Ph.D. program in Educational Sciences for Teacher Education is a prerequisite.
  • Successful applicants must be fluent in a Scandinavian language and have excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

When assessing applicants, emphasis will be placed on the submitted project description.

In the assessment and ranking of qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on

  • the scientific quality of the project description, including originality and potential
  • the Ph.D. project's feasibility within the standard period (three years)
  • the project description’s relevance to the overriding project to which the project description is affiliated
  • attached scientific work
  • other relevant publications
  • experience from previous research activities and project participation
  • teaching experience at the college and university level can be an asset
  • personal qualities

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, job title and position code. Position code 1017. State salary wage scale 54, 501 200 NOK per year.   


Expert evaluation:

Applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. All applications will be reviewed by the faculty before the application papers are forwarded to the expert committee. Applications from applicants who are not qualified, will not be forwarded for assessment.

Applicants may also be assessed by an internal screening committee at OsloMet in addition to the expert committee. If an internal screening committee is used, applicants will be informed after the application deadline has expired. Original documents must be presented in connection with an interview. OsloMet inspects documents in order to give you as a candidate a proper evaluation and ensure fair competition.
