Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway's third largest university with almost 22,000 students and over 2,500 employees. We have campuses in central Oslo and at Romerike. The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD) offers higher education and research and development (R&D) activities within technical subjects, arts and design. The Faculty has approximately 4.000 students and 400 staff members and is situated at Pilestredet Campus in downtown Oslo and at Kjeller Campus in Viken.


Department of Mechanical, Electronic and Chemical Engineering (MEK) at Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD) is one out of five departments at TKD. The department offers three bachelor's degree programmes and a master's degree programme in electronics, in addition to research and development activities. A master’s program in Mechanical Engineering is under development and is planned to start in August 2024. The department has approximately 35 staff members, 10 PhD students, and 450 students.

MEK has a vacant position as Associate Professor in Solid Mechanics with mechanical and/or structural engineering focus. The position will involve teaching and research in the areas of continuum mechanics, computational solid mechanics, dynamics and vibrations, and finite element methods.

We are looking for a candidate with a talent and a passion for teaching, research, and innovation. The candidate will be expected to have conducted extensive research in the field of solid mechanics. The research should be reflected in an extensive publication list in journals and conferences of high quality. Experience from research and development work in or in close collaboration with the industry is rated positively.

The candidate is expected to actively strengthen and shape the academic environment and research work at the department and the university's research community in general, including interdisciplinary work across departments at TKD, as well as in collaboration with other faculties at OsloMet.

The candidate is expected to initiate and secure external funding for new research activities. Previous experience with applying and securing external funding (for example from Research Council of Norway and/or EU) is considered positive for this position.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Planning, developing, and delivering courses at bachelor, master, and PhD levels
  • Initiating and leading applications for external funding for research in Solid Mechanics and related fields
  • Initiating and conducting research within solid mechanics as well as facilitating the funding and recruitment of PhD candidates
  • Actively contributing to the development of high-quality education at MEK and OsloMet as a whole
  • Communicating and disseminating research results to both academic environment and the broader audience
  • Performing administrative tasks related to educational, research, and innovation activities.

Qualifications

The required qualifications for the position are as follows:

  • PhD in Mechanical engineering, Structural engineering a related field.
  • Academic excellence and documented high quality research work within one or more of the following topics:
    • Continuum mechanics
    • Functional materials
    • Structural modelling and analysis
    • Computational solid mechanics
    • Material characterization and experimentation.

Experience with initiating and managing research projects. Experience in interdisciplinary research. Experience in teaching and supervision. Experience in collaborating with, or direct experience from, the industry. Fluency in English.

The candidate is expected to acquire a working command of Norwegian within three years of being appointed.

Candidates who have no relevant qualifications in pedagogy at the time of appointment must commit themselves to complete OsloMet's programme for basic pedagogical competence (15 ECTS credits) within two years. The university will test pedagogical skills in connection with a personal interview.

General criteria for appointments to academic positions are covered by the Regulations for appointment and promotion to academic posts.

On top of the required qualifications (listed above), the following will be evaluated positively:

  • Experience with applications such as:
    • Structural aspects of Renewable energies (wave energy, offshore wind, and floating solar panels)
    • Offshore structures
    • Structural aspects of offshore fisheries and aquaculture cages
  • Knowledge and experience in any of the following areas:
    • Dynamics and Vibration
    • Damage mechanics
    • Fatigue
    • Digitalization and Machine Learning
    • Flexible structures
  • Experience with applying and securing external funding (for example from Research Council of Norway and/or EU).
  • Pedagogical education, a motivation to develop academic and teaching skills, and an interest in digital and innovative educational techniques and practices.
  • Experience with and interest in technology transfer, innovation, and patents.

The position is remunerated in accordance with the Basic Collective Agreement for the Civil Service and OsloMets salary policy: Assosiate Professor, position code: 1011. The salary is NOK 543 500 – 702 100 per year, salary scale 60 – 74. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well qualified applicants.
