The Department of Mechanical, Electronic and Chemical Engineering has a vacant position as Associate Professor in Biotechnology. We are looking for a candidate with a talent and a passion for teaching, research and innovation.

The candidate is expected to actively strengthen and shape the academic community and research activities at the department and the university in general. The department collaborates with several academic environments at the Faculty of Health Sciences, and we want to strengthen the collaboration, including the expertise in analysis of large-scale data for biomedical issues. We are looking for a candidate who actively wants to build up research activity within this area in an interdisciplinary environment internally at OsloMet and in collaboration with external research groups. The candidate is expected to apply for and secure external funding.

The candidate is expected to teach at the bachelor's engineering program in biotechnology and chemistry at the department and initiate and carry out relevant professional and pedagogical development work such as the development of a master's program. The engineers of the future must have a high level of professional competence and the ability to work interdisciplinary in an international environment. Students must acquire and develop solid theoretical knowledge and practical skills in addition to social skills. The department emphasizes that teaching, supervision and development must take place in a good learning environment. Our employees must therefore have a positive attitude towards students in development, in addition to having a solid academic and theoretical background.

Your duties and responsibilities will be  

  • Plan, develop and deliver courses at bachelor level, including supervision and assessment. There can also be teaching at master's and PhD level.
  • Initiate and conduct research in biotechnology, preferably developing productive approaches to the analysis of large-scale data for biomedical issues.
  • Promote professional and pedagogical development work, including digitization.
  • Apply for externally funded research projects and recruit PhD candidates.
  • Build networks, interactions and collaborations with business and the public sector.
  • Communicating and disseminating research results for both academic and a broader audience. 
  • Actively contributing to the development of the department and OsloMet as a whole. 
  • Performing administrative tasks related to educational, research, and innovation activities.

Qualification requirements  

  • PhD in biotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related fields
  • Sufficient professional competence to teach biotechnology, molecular biology and biochemistry at bachelor level. Basic knowledge in chemistry is an advantage
  • Documented research work of high quality, preferably in analysis of large-scale data for biomedical issues
  • Experience in teaching and supervision in higher education
  • Experience with initiating and managing research projects
  • Fluency in English
  • Good oral and written presentation skills in English are required. Applicants who do not have sufficient knowledge of Scandinavian must have acquired Norwegian knowledge corresponding to level B2 within three years of commencement. Courses are offered at OsloMet.

Candidates who have no relevant qualifications in pedagogy at the time of appointment must commit themselves to complete OsloMet's programme for basic pedagogical competence (15 ECTS credits) within two years.

 The university will test pedagogical skills in connection with a personal interview.

General criteria for appointment of a position as Associate Professor are stipulated in  Regulations for appointment and promotion to academic posts. 

The following will be emphasized

  • Experience in programming and / or use of biostatistic software etc
  • Pedagogical education and motivation to further develop skills in teaching, including interest in digital and innovative pedagogical tools and practices
  • Experience in applying for and securing external funding (for example from the Research Council of Norway, the EU or open competition arenas)
  • Experience with, and interest in, technology transfer, innovation and patents.

  • The ability to motivate and inspire students and colleagues
  • Curiosity and eagerness to develop as a professional leader
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt teaching and research to the needs of the department and OsloMet, including interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Good collaboration and communication skills.

The position is remunerated in accordance with the Basic Collective Agreement for the Civil Service and OsloMets salary policy 1011 Associate professor. The salary is NOK NOK 543 500 – 702 100 per year, salary scale 60 – 74.  A higher salary may be considered for particularly well qualified applicants.

  • A research statement (up to 2 pages) outlining the candidate's relevant research and plans for research activity in the position. This overview should include an overview of existing projects and R&D cooperation
  • Any other relevant documentation
