Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway's third largest university with almost 22,000 students and over 2,500 employees. We have campuses in central Oslo and at Romerike. OsloMet educates students and conducts research that contributes to the sustainability of the Norwegian welfare state and the metropolitan region.
The Faculty of Health Sciences consists of five departments and offers study programmes on all levels, including PhD. The faculty has about 6000 students and nearly 600 members of staff.
Department of Nursing and Health Promotion is located at all three campus: Kjeller, Pilestredet and Sandvika. The department has approximately 3000 students and 250 employees.
The Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing and Health Promotion, announces one PhD fellowship in mental health and well-being of children and young people with an immigrant background. This is an opportunity to join the multi-disciplinary research group “Mental Health”. Our main goal is to develop a deeper understanding of the social, psychological and biological processes that contribute to the resilience and well-being of children and youth with an immigrant background, and what processes that might affect their mental health and well-being in a negative way.
The PhD degree will be affiliated to the PhD Programme in Health Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, OsloMet. Start date depends on formal admission to the PhD program in Health Science at OsloMet. The research fellowship period is four years, of which 25 per cent of the time comprises obligatory duties associated with teaching and supervision of students.
The successful applicant will demonstrate an interest in the thematic areas of child and adolescent health and well-being and immigration, and personal qualifications to take our research steps ahead at the international research front.
The PhD candidate’s project will contribute to obtain new insight into important mechanisms explaining disparities in mental well-being among children with an immigrant background. Many children born of immigrant parents in Norway are overrepresented in official statistics on poverty and social exclusion. They are also more likely to leave school early, have more contacts with the child welfare services, and report more mental health problems. Nevertheless, children of some specific ethnic groups do better on these well-being indicators than other ethnic groups, including native Norwegian. There are also substantial disparities in well-being within some ethnic groups. There is scant research, however, addressing the underlying mechanisms for such disparities among children with an immigrant background. The PhD candidate will employ a mixed method (sequential explanatory) combining both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to explain disparities in mental well-being among children with an immigrant background. This includes data collection and analyses, scientific writing, and dissemination.
