Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway's third largest university with almost 22,000 students and over 2,500 employees. We have campuses in central Oslo and at Romerike. Faculty of Social Sciences offers study programmes within archivistics, library and information science, journalism and media studies, social work, social policy and child welfare, public management and business.

The faculty has about 4200 students and nearly 280 members of staff.

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies has approximately 450 students and 30 employees. Study programmes and research are closely connected and exhibit our international profile.

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies announces a vacancy for the Head of Department. The position is a fixed-term position for the period 01.01.2022 - 31.12.2026, with the opportunity to apply for the same position twice more for fixed terms of four years.

The Department offers Bachelor's studies in Photojournalism, Journalism as well as Media and Communication. These are in addition to a Master's program in Media Development (with fields of study in Journalism, Media and Communication, and Non-fiction). The Department is located in Oslo, with 34 employees and approximately 435 students. The Department has an active research environment with five research groups.

Area of responsibility

The Head of Department is the principle academic and administrative head of the department. This entails responsibility for results for education, research, development work, continuing and further education, and dissemination. The Head of Department has personnel responsibility for the Department's employees, and budget and profit responsibility for the Department's finances. The Head of Department is a member of the faculty's management group and reports to the Dean. The Head of Department is required to attend regular meetings with faculty, staff and students. The faculty administration, which is headed by the Faculty Director, supports the Head of Department in administrative work.

The education sector is changing significantly, and the position requires that you have the ability to carry out professional renewal, strategic planning and development based on society's needs. Qualifications and conditions

You must have

Formal competence is required for appointment to a scientific position (preferably a doctorate or equivalent) at the university, and first-hand experience with teaching, research and development work.

Furthermore, it is required to have:

  • management experience from teaching or research activities
  • experience from research and education in journalism, media studies or equivalent.
  • good understanding of financial management and personnel management
  • that you are professionally strong
  • ability for strategic management
  • good oral and written presentation skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, as well as English

Other information

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, job title Head of Department (instituttleder) and position code 1475. Salary NOK 768 500 – 910 000 annually, state wage scale 78 – 84. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well qualified applicants. Law deducts 2% of the salary to the State Pension Fund.
