Faculty of Health Sciences , Nursing and Health Promotion

Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway's third largest university with almost 22,000 students and over 2,500 employees. We have campuses in central Oslo and at Romerike. OsloMet educates students and conducts research that contributes to the sustainability of the Norwegian welfare state and the metropolitan region.

The Faculty of Health Sciences consists of five departments and offers study programmes on all levels, including PhD. The faculty has about 6000 students and nearly 600 members of staff.

The Department of Life Sciences and Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences has a vacant position for a PhD fellow in the field of reproductive biology from 1 October 2020. The vacancy is for three years, with a possibility of four years, where 25% of the position is compulsory work (teaching and supervision activities or research administrative work).

Field of work

The PhD fellow will work as part of the ReproAl research group on the project ‘Artificial Intelligence – a novel tool in assisted reproduction technology’, funded by the Research Council of Norway (FRIMEDBIO research project). The group consists of researchers from the Department of Life Sciences and Health, the Department of Computer Science, the Centre for Fertility and SimulaMet. The project plans to make use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the selection of embryo and spermatozoa for use in assisted reproduction. The research team will carry out a randomised study where the AI methods are applied as a supplement to standard treatment procedures, compared with standard treatment only. We will also be developing cell biology methods to evaluate the fertility potential of sperm, both in vivo and in vitro.

The project is interdisciplinary, and the group has competence in cell biology, artificial intelligence, embryology, assisted reproduction and andrology. Which part of the project will be most central for the PhD project will depend on the candidate’s skill set. The group collaborates with national and international researchers, and the Department of Computer Science will take on a PhD fellow to carry out his or her doctorate work in the project, with emphasis on developing AI models.

The project description can be obtained by contacting Professor Trine B Haugen, Researcher Erwan Delbarre or Senior embryologist Mette H Stensen. See the contact information below.
