The Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) has approximately 550 employees and 7000 students and is located in Oslo and Akershus. The Faculty is comprised of four departments as well as the National Centre of Multicultural Education (NAFO). The Faculty educates tomorrow’s teachers from kindergarten through upper secondary school, in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Faculty offers a PhD in Education. In addition, the Faculty offers development studies and studies in sign language and interpreting. Diversity is a core value for the Faculty and its activities. The Faculty’s research and development focuses on practical training and is both profession-oriented and internationally oriented.

The Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education (GFU) has strong research communities within the field of school subjects, educational science, and digital competence, and educates teachers for the Norwegian school system in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Department offers studies on bachelor and master level, and contributes to the general development of skills for school employees through continuing and further education.

There is a vacancy for two positions as an Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis or førstelektor) of English at the Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education at the Faculty of Education and International Studies, one permanent position from 01.08.20, and one temporary from 01.08.20 to 31.07.21.

Duties:

• Teaching and supervising at bachelor's, master’s and continuing education programs
• Carrying out own research and development work
• Participating in the development of major research projects and applications for external funding together with colleagues in the expert community
• Participating in research collaborations with national and international partners
• Following up students in practical training
• Contributing to the work of further developing the expert community and the department’s study programmes
• Actively contributing to the development of high-quality education
• Disseminating research results to the academic community as well as to the general public
• Cooperating with schools and schoolowners
• Actively contributing to the development of the department and OsloMet in general
• Academic-administrative tasks

The teacher education profile and the profession-oriented research and development work is very important to the faculty. It is therefore important that the appointed candidate is willing to focus on challenges specific to the profession.

Qualification requirements:

Persons appointed to a position as a førsteamanuensis must have a doctoral degree in English with relevance for education or equivalent.

Persons appointed to a position as a førstelektor must have a university degree equivalent to a master's degree, a degree at second degree level under the pre-2003 system (‘hovedfag’) or a master’s degree in English, and documented extensive research and development work that in quality and scope corresponds to the workload and level of a doctorate degree.

If not possible to appoint in a position as Associate Professor, there might be an opening to appoint in a position as universitetslektor, Assistant Professor. This will first and foremost be applicants that have started the process of qualifying for Associate Professor. Persons appointed to a position as an Assistant Professor must have a master’s degree or equivalent in English.

The applicant must be able to document relevant educational theory and practice. Applicants who are unable to document basic teaching qualifications upon appointment, must achieve such qualifications within two years. OsloMet offers a programme in university pedagogy (UHPED) which meets this requirement.

Good oral and written presentation skills in a Scandinavian language and English are required. Applicants whose first language is not one of the Scandinavian languages, must document both oral and written language skills.

In the assessment and ranking of qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on:

• Insight into school development and experience with school development focusing on the English subject, or good knowledge of and teaching experience related to language didactics with a special focus on the system and structure of English (phonetics, grammar etc.) and language awareness
• Knowledge of and/or experience with English teaching in Norwegian schools
• Research and development work of relevance to the position
• Experience with research networks and projects involving external funding
• Experience with teaching and supervising at bachelor’s, master’s and continuing education programs
• Good teaching skills
• Good digital skills
• The ability to communicate and cooperate with students and colleagues
• Personal qualities that can make positive contributions to the working environment

The position is in accordance with the pay scale for state employees: The annual salary for Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis position code 1011 / førstelektor position code 1198) is from NOK 532 300,- to NOK 691 400,- a year. The annual salary for Assistant Professor (universitetslektor position code 1009) is from NOK 456 400,- to NOK 594 400,- a year. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A contribution of 2% to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.
