Oslo Metropolitan University, Externally funded research projects

Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway's third largest university with almost 22,000 students and over 2,500 employees. We have campuses in central Oslo and at Romerike. OsloMet educates students and conducts research that contributes to the sustainability of the Norwegian welfare state and the metropolitan region.

MSCA Fellow in “Computational Methods in Structural Engineering”

Call for Expression of Interest for mutual application under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship scheme

Prof. Vagelis Plevris from the Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology of OsloMet—Oslo Metropolitan University is searching for a top-class Postdoc researcher (at any stage in their career) of any nationality interested in developing a collaborative application for an EU-funded Marie Sklodowska Curie Action Individual Fellowship (MSCA-IF) project, to conduct research at OsloMet—Oslo Metropolitan University for a period of 1-2 years starting in 2020.

Areas of research

Computational methods are computer-based methods used to numerically solve mathematical models that describe physical phenomena. The purpose of computational modeling is to study the behavior of complex systems by means of computer simulations and it can be used to make predictions of the system’s behavior under different conditions, often for cases in which intuitive analytical solutions are not available. The evolution of electronic computers together with the tremendous increase of computational power has triggered the continuous development of computational methods during the last decades. Rapid advances in computer hardware have had a profound effect on various engineering disciplines. The applications are numerous and cover a broad field of engineering branches including civil, mechanical, naval, electrical, aerospace, material, biomolecular, among others. Computational structural engineering has evolved as an insightful blend combining both structural analysis and computer science.

Given the development of computational methods and relevant tools during the last decades, new ideas have evolved, outside the scope of prescriptive design codes and the use of computers in structural engineering is nowadays dominant. Very powerful capabilities are now available for the simulation and analysis of structures, yet there are still many exciting research challenges. The field of computational structural engineering will continue to grow and contribute to technological development as we are only at the beginning of the use of computer simulations and we only now begin to understand the extent to which these will influence and enrich the engineering profession and our lives in the future.

There are various fields of application of computational methods in structural engineering, including but not limited to

  • Advanced modeling and simulation of buildings and structures;
  • Finite Element Methods (FEM);
  • Non-linear static and dynamic analysis of structures with FEM;
  • Computational methods in earthquake engineering;
  • Optimum design of structures;
  • Smart structures and systems;
  • Structural health monitoring and control;
  • Reliability and probabilistic analysis of structures;
  • Neural Networks and their applications in engineering.

The project aims to bridge the gap between numerical methods and computational mechanics in the broader field of civil and structural engineering. We invite applicants to propose more detailed and focused topics within the scope of this research as a part of their application. We encourage applicants with background in civil and structural engineering, earthquake engineering and computational mechanics. Successful candidates will be supervised by Associate Prof. Vagelis Plevris and will work as team members of the OsloMet research group of the Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology.

With this call for Expression of Interest, we invite researchers to submit their resumé in ERC format (including publication list) and a short project description, that will be the basis for selecting a maximum of three candidates with which we will collaborate in developing competitive MSCA-IF proposals. In this first phase, the cooperation will be carried out remotely, but with regular email and Skype communication, and one physical meeting, if convenient. If applicants are successful, the place of work will be at the main campus in central Oslo.

Starting Date

The candidates must express their interest in participation to the OsloMet program and send their applications by March 25th, 2019. The EU informs the results on the MSCA-IF applications in February 2020. Successful candidate(s) are expected to be available to start within the following two months and no later than summer 2020. The candidates must be assessed as in principle eligible for a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship.

Main duties of the position

The successful candidate will primarily work on the Marie Curie EU funded project, but he/she will be integrated at the research group and the department in general, by taking part in regular meetings and discussion groups. The researcher will be introduced to Vagelis Plevris’ national and international network and he/she may also be included in other ongoing projects or in proposal processes at the department.

We are looking for applicants who have

  • Good individual scientific research capabilities;
  • Already published relevant research work in prestigious scientific journals;
  • An excellent track record in research, necessary for being able to develop a competitive Marie Curie Fellowship application;
  • An open and cooperation-oriented nature, but with strong abilities for independent academic work;
  • Excellent command / highly proficient in spoken and written English.

It is important for OsloMet to reflect the population of our region, and all qualified candidates are welcome to apply. We make active efforts to further develop as an inclusive workplace and to adapt the workplace if required.

Evaluation Committee

Interested candidates should upload their resume and a 1-page note describing the project for which a Marie Curie grant will be applied. Proposals will be pre-selected based on internal evaluation and the availability of suitable supervision. Candidates will be informed of the results of the pre-selection by March 26th, 2019.

Selected candidates may be invited to Master classes to meet the supervisor and visit the research environment at OsloMet to further develop the proposal organized by OsloMet, at Oslo between 29.04-30.04.2019.

The candidate(s) selected to proceed with a full Marie Curie Application will be supported by the OsloMet EU team and the leader of the research group. The deadline for the submission of the EU project application is on September 11th, 2019.

Originals must be presented if you are invited for an interview. OsloMet performs document inspection in order to give you as a candidate a proper evaluation and ensure fair competition.
