The Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) has approximately 550 employees and 7000 students and is located in Oslo and Akershus. The Faculty is comprised of four departments as well as the National Centre of Multicultural Education (NAFO). The Faculty educates tomorrow’s teachers from kindergarten through upper secondary school, in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Faculty offers a PhD in Education. In addition, the Faculty offers development studies and studies in sign language and interpreting. Diversity is a core value for the Faculty and its activities. The Faculty’s research and development focuses on practical training and is both profession-oriented and internationally oriented.

The Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education (GFU) has strong research communities within the field of school subjects, educational science, and digital competence, and educates teachers for the Norwegian school system in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Department offers studies on bachelor and master level, and contributes to the general development of skills for school employees through continuing and further education.

PhD Fellow positions at primary and lower secondary school level in subject didactics, education, pedagogy

There are four full-time PhD positions for research in subjects: didactics, didactics and pedagogy at the Faculty of Education and International Studies for a four-year period with appointment and start-up on 1 September 2019.  The successful applicants will have their workplace at the Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education on Pilestredet campus. The positions will consist of 25% teaching assignments in relevant teacher education subjects. 

The faculty is seeking empirical and theoretical projects that can contribute to the development of knowledge in the field covered by the following research projects: 

  • Research-based primary and lower secondary school teaching with focus on the subjects natural science and English.
  • Challenging Picture books and Shared Picture book Reading: Empirical Studies in Language and Literature Learning
  • Teacher Qualification for the 21st Century - Teachers' digital competence (TEQ21)
  • Conversations in the classroom
  • English as a lingua franca practices for inclusive multilingual classrooms’ – ENRICH

Applicants must write a project description containing a project outline for a PhD project, which must include a description of the research question, relevance, theoretical and methodological approaches, and, a schedule for the research fellowship period, including any stays abroad.

Appointment to a research fellowship is conditional on admission to the PhD programme in Educational Sciences for Teacher Education at the Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) at OsloMet. Applications for admission must be approved and an agreement entered into no later than three months after the PhD fellow takes up the position. Relevant candidates will be informed about the application process and deadlines. The person appointed is expected to complete the programme within the nominal length of study. 

Qualification requirements:

  • a completed master's degree/second degree (corresponding to 120 credits) with a letter grade of B or better and an academic background in teacher education, other teaching qualifications, science of education, development studies or other relevant education at corresponding level. Applicants with grade C may get admission if it is proved that the candidate is particularly suitable for a PhD degree. Applicants without a letter grade from a previous degree must be able to document an equivalent academic basis.Link to the regulations.
  • good written and verbal presentation skills in one of the Scandinavian languages and English 

In the assessment and ranking of qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on:

  • the scientific quality of the project, including originality and potential
  • whether the project can be completed within the nominal length of study
  • whether the project is relevant for the knowledge need in the relevant field
  • education
  • ability to work independently, methodically and purposefully
  • motivation for the position
  • personal qualities, including the capacity to implement projects

Applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The following documents must be uploaded by the application deadline:

  • an application letter with information containing the applicant's background and motivation
  • a schedule for completion, including for any stays abroad
  • a project description of no more than 10 pages plus a reference list
  • CV
  • copies of diplomas and references
  • certified copies of diplomas and transcripts of grades must include the ECTS grades (A–F).
  • Foreign diplomas must be translated into English by the degree-conferring institution.
  • Education taken abroad should preferably be recognised in advance, and a certified copy of the letter of recognition should be enclosed.
  • master's degree/second degree thesis
  • list of publications, if relevant
  • any scholarly work that the applicant wishes the expert committee to take into consideration 

The documents must be in either English or a Scandinavian language, and any translations must be government authorised. Originals must be presented if you are invited for an interview, and OsloMet checks documents in order to give candidates proper and fair evaluation. 

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Before the application documents are forwarded to an expert committee, all the applications will be reviewed by the faculty. Applications from non-qualified applicants will not be sent for evaluation.

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for state employees, position code 1017, with an annual salary of NOK 449 400-480 600,- A statutory contribution of 2 per cent to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the salary.

The fellowships at LUI are as of today awarded operating funds in the amount of NOK 25 000,- to fund their PhD project (annually). In addition, research fellows can get funding for certain activities from relevant research groups.
