Department of Journalism and Media Studies

Oslo Metropolitan University is Norway's third largest university with almost 22,000 students and over 2,500 employees. We have campuses in central Oslo and at Romerike. Faculty of Social Sciences offers study programmes within archivistics, library and information science, journalism and media studies, social work, social policy and child welfare, public management and business.

The faculty has about 4200 students and nearly 280 members of staff.

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies has approximately 450 students and 30 employees. Study programmes and research are closely connected and exhibit our international profile.

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies has an open position as associate professor of journalism with an emphasis on research and teaching on topics related to digital journalism, social media and press ethics. 

Main duties of the position

The position will primarily be linked to the department’s BA and MA programs in journalism, but teaching at other programs may also be relevant. The successful candidate is expected to:

  • initiate, lead and carry out research projects related to digital journalism, social media and/or press ethics
  • teach practical and theoretical courses on digital and social media journalism for our undergraduate and graduate programs in journalism.
  • teach practical and theoretical courses on press ethics, especially related to norms and practices of verification, source criticism and fact checking in a digital age.
  • supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and possibly PhD students.

 We are looking for applicants who have

  • a PhD degree in journalism studies, media and communication or other relevant fields
  • a solid track record of high quality academic publications related to digital journalism, social media and/or press ethics
  • experience with initiating and leading research projects related to digital journalism, social media and/or press ethics
  • experience with writing successful applications for externally funded research projects
  • a strong international research network related to digital journalism, social media and/or press ethics
  • journalistic experience
  • experience with cooperation with journalists and media companies related to teaching and research
  • knowledge of the Norwegian media landscape and Norwegian practices and cultures of journalism
  • experience with teaching digital journalism, social media and/or press ethics at university level
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Norwegian or another Scandinavian language (Swedish or Danish)

The university will test pedagogical skills in connection with a personal interview.  Documented qualifications in pedagogy and experience are emphasized.

Candidates who have no relevant qualifications in pedagogy at the time of appointment must commit themselves to complete OsloMet’s programme for basic pedagogical competence (15 ECTS credits) within two years.

  • are creative and like to search for new solutions to both new and old problems
  • master digital technologies, especially related to the practices of and research on digital journalism
  • have good communication skills
  • are structured, good planners and not afraid of administrative tasks related to teaching and Research

 Expert evaluation

An expert committee will assess applicants after an initial screening by an internal committee. You must upload the following documents together with your application by the final date for applications:

  • CV, references and all pages of certificates/diplomas. The certificates/diplomas must include ECTS grades (A–F). Foreign diplomas must be translated into English by the degree-conferring institution. Education taken abroad should preferably be recognised in advance by NOKUT, and a confirmed copy of the letter of recognition should be enclosed.
  • Up to 10 academic documents/publications

 The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, 1011 Associate professor. Salary NOK 524 200 – 682 200 annually. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well qualified applicants. Law deducts 2% of the salary to the State Pension Fund.
