The Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) has approximately 550 employees and 7000 students and is located in Oslo and Akershus. The Faculty is comprised of four departments as well as the National Centre of Multicultural Education (NAFO). The Faculty educates tomorrow’s teachers from kindergarten through upper secondary school, in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Faculty offers a PhD in Education. In addition, the Faculty offers development studies and studies in sign language and interpreting. Diversity is a core value for the Faculty and its activities. The Faculty’s research and development focuses on practical training and is both profession-oriented and internationally oriented.

The Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education (GFU) has strong research communities within the field of school subjects, educational science, and digital competence, and educates teachers for the Norwegian school system in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Department offers studies on bachelor and master level, and contributes to the general development of skills for school employees through continuing and further education.

A permanent position as Professor in the field of arts and crafts at The Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education at the Faculty of Education and International Studies is available from 01.08.19. Read more about the faculty and the department here.

Main duties:

  • Initiate and implement research- and development projects.
  • Initiate new research projects and apply for external funding together with colleges in the department.
  • Facilitate research collaboration with national and international partners.
  • Take a central role in developing the programs in the department.
  • Teach and supervise bachelor, master and Ph.D. students, and follow up students in practice periods.
  • Fulfill administrative duties.

As of today, the department does not have its own specialization at the Master’s level in arts and crafts, but cooperates with the academic community attached to the Master’s Programme in Visual and Performing Arts at the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design on the exchange of students and expertise.

Teacher education and professional research and development work are central to the profile of the Faculty. It is important that the successful applicant is willing to orient research projects toward topics specifically relevant to the teaching profession.

Qualifications:

  • professor qualifications in arts and crafts at a scientific level in accordance with international or national standards, or extensive top-level artistic activity in accordance with international standards, and relevant breadth and depth in the subject at the highest level

or

  • the Norwegian dosent qualifications in arts and crafts require extensive high-level research and development work related to the professional field. In addition, high qualifications are required in one or more of the following fields:
    • o management of research and development work
    • o interdisciplinary cooperation and networking
    • o extensive cooperation with the trade and industry sector and society sector to develop study programmes and research and development activities
    • o extensive cooperation with the cultural scene to develop study programmes and research and development activities
    • o professional experience of a particular nature and relevance from trade and industry sector and society sector
    • o professional experience of a particular nature and relevance from the cultural scene and/or development of scientific collections
  • Documented pedagogical competence and experience. Candidates who have no relevant qualifications in pedagogy at the time of appointment must commit to completing the program for basic pedagogical competence (15 ECTS credits) at OsloMet within two years.


Emphasis is placed on both practical and theoretical work within the main areas of visual communication, design, art and architecture in the arts and craft subject. Successful applicants must relate their expertise to at least one of these main areas.

In the assessment and ranking of qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on:

  • Extensive work with research- and development that are relevant for the position. Publications/products/exhibitions from the resent six years will be emphasized.
  • Experience with research networks and leadership of projects with external funding
  • Experience with teaching and supervising on all levels (mainly bachelor- and master levels)
  • Pedagogical competence
  • Experience from professional leadership
  • Good ICT competence
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with students and colleagues
  • Personal qualities that can be positive to the working environment in the department
  • Good oral and written skills in a Scandinavian language and English. Applicants who do not have one of the Scandinavian languages as their mother tongue must document both oral and written language skills. Applicants that do not fulfil this qualification, must dedicate them self to learning a Scandinavian language within two years after appointment.

The general criteria for appointment in a position as professor are stipulated in regulations relating to Appointment and Promotion to Teaching and Research Positions (Forskrift om ansettelse og opprykk i undervisnings- og forskerstillinger), § 1-2.

OsloMet performs document inspections in order to give you as a candidate a proper evaluation and ensure fair competition.

You will as an applicant be evaluated by an expert committee. Before the expert committee receives access to the applications, the faculty will withdraw applicants that does not fulfil the qualifications for the position.

Other information:

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay scale for Norwegian state employees, job titel Professor and position code 1013/1532. Salary NOK 695 500-893 900 annually. A higher salary may be offered to particularly well qualified applicants. 2 % og the salary is deducted by law and goes to the Norwegian State Pension Fund.
