The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD) offers higher education and research and development (R&D) activities within technical subjects, arts and design. The Faculty has approximately 4.000 students and 400 staff members and is situated at Pilestredet Campus in downtown Oslo and at Kjeller Campus in Viken.


The Department of Mechanical, Electronics and Chemical Engineering has a vacant position as a Professor in analysis of biological “omics” data.  

We are looking for a candidate with a talent and a passion for teaching, research, and innovation. The candidate will be expected to have conducted extensive research within analysis of biological “omics” data and this should be reflected in an extensive publication list in well-recognized journals.  

The candidate is expected to actively strengthen and shape the academic and research work at the department and the university's research community in general, including interdisciplinary work across departments at the Faculty of TKD and in collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences. Collaboration with strong research groups at Oslo University Hospital is an attractive opportunity.   

The candidate is expected to initiate and secure external funding for new research activities within the scope of analysis of biological “omics” data. Extensive experience with applying and securing external funding, e.g. the Research Council of Norway and EU, is a requirement for this position, in addition to academic excellence. 

Tasks and responsibilities  

  • Taking the lead in the development of major research projects and applications for external funding in analysis of biological “omics” data and related fields and recruitment of PhD candidates.
  • Planning, developing and delivering courses at PhD, master, and bachelor level, including teaching, supervision and assessment. 
  • Initiating and developing research collaborations with national and international partners
  • Actively contributing to the development of high-quality education in analysis of biological “omics” data.
  • Actively contributing to the development of the department and OsloMet as a whole. 
  • Communicating and disseminating research results for both academic and broader audience. 
  • Performing administrative tasks related to educational, research, and innovation activities. 

Qualifications  

The required qualifications for the position are as follows:  

  • Qualifications as Professor in biological “omics” data
  • PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, biotechnology, molecular biology, life science or a related field.
  • Background in molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry or a related field.
  • Expertise and proven track record in biological big data analysis in health sciences such as analysis of one or more “omics” data (ie., genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics etc), systems biology, research in the interface between biology and data science, and/or related field. 
  • Experience with initiating and managing research projects and a solid track record of securing external funding for research
  • Experience with academic management
  • Fluency in English is expected. Applicants, who do not have adequate proficiency in a Scandinavian language, must acquire Norwegian skills corresponding to at least level B2 within three years of commencement.
  • Fundamental competency in teaching and supervision at the university and/or college level, as well as documented:
    • o quality development in own teaching and supervision over time
    • extensive experience with supervision, preferably at the master/PhD level
    • participation in the development of educational quality in professional communities

 

Preference will be given to candidates whose research activities and interests align with ongoing research at the Department of Mechanical, Electronics and Chemical Engineering and the Faculty of Health Sciences. 

General criteria for appointment of a position as Professor are stipulated in Regulations relating to Appointment and Promotion to Teaching and Research Positions. Regulations for appointment and promotion to academic posts.

The applicant must document relevant educational theory and practice for higher education. Applicants, who are unable to document basic teaching qualifications on appointment, must acquire these qualifications within two years. OsloMet offers a course on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (UHPED), in English together with the University of Oslo, that meets this requirement.

The university will test pedagogical skills in connection with a personal interview.

  • Experience with and interest in technology transfer, innovation and patents
  • Excellent public-speaking skills and experience in speaking to non-academic audiences 
  • Research and development work relevant to the position. Emphasis will be placed on scientific production from the last six years (statutory leave of absence not included).

  • up to ten full-text scientific articles, submitted together with a table of contents and a short introduction highlighting the relevance of each article to the profile of the position and a detailed description of the contribution to the article by the applicant
  • PhD dissertation and other relevant academic documents
  • a text (up to 2 pages) outlining the candidate’s relevant pedagogical experience and plans for pedagogical activity and development in the position (“teaching statement”)
  • a text (up to 2 pages) outlining the candidate’s relevant research and plans for research activity in the position (“research statement”). This overview should include an overview of existing projects and research collaborators. 
  • other relevant documentation

The salary for the position is in accordance with the pay for state employees: job code 1013 professor, salary scale 75-84, NOK 704 900– 906 000.  

A higher salary may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. Law deducts 2% of the salary to the State Pension Fund.
