The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design (TKD) offers higher education and research and development (R&D) activities within technical subjects, arts and design. The Faculty has approximately 4.000 students and 400 staff members and is situated at Pilestredet Campus in downtown Oslo and at Kjeller Campus in Viken.

The Faculty of Technology, Art and Design, Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology of Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) is looking for a motivated PhD candidate with a master’s degree in structural engineering (or close to obtaining such a degree). The vacant PhD research fellowship position has a duration of 3 years.

The PhD position is located at OsloMet’s Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology in central Oslo. The candidate will be enrolled in the new PhD Programme of OsloMet. The applicants must qualify for admission to the actual PhD Programme.


Area of research

The PhD research project is within the research area “Vulnerability Assessment of Existing Building and Structures”. The PhD student will participate in the Horizon2020 project titled “Development of a Decision Support System for Improved Resilience & Sustainable Reconstruction of historic areas to cope with Climate Change & Extreme Events based on Novel Sensors and Modelling Tools” (Project acronym “HYPERION”). The OsloMet research team will be the coordinator of the relevant Work Packages (WPs) and particularly WP 5 “Multi-Hazards Modelling, Vulnerability and Impact Assessment of the historic areas”.

HYPERION project as a whole aims to leverage existing tools and services, e.g. climate/extreme events models, and their impacts, decay models of building materials etc. and novel technologies to deliver an integrated resilience assessment platform, addressing multi-hazard risk understanding, better preparedness, faster, adapted and efficient response, and sustainable reconstruction of historic areas. HYPERION will take into account the local eco-systems in the Cultural Heritage (CH) areas, mapping out their interactions and following a truly integrated/sustainable reconstruction approach (technical, social, institutional, environmental and economic level), by incorporating active communities’ participation and by supporting new business models.

In this project, the vision is to develop a methodology, tools and procedures for the utilization of data from seismic hazard analysis and local climate data as direct or indirect inputs to the numerical application and enhancing the constitutive model in the structural simulator. Finite element analyses can be used to assess the seismic risk and demonstration of the nonlinear performance of existing structures. The current condition of buildings in the historic areas can be used to calibrate the finite element models of structures and provide a measure of reliability for developed procedures.

Main duties of the position

• conduct research in the fields of the project and publish the relevant results in scientific conference proceedings and academic journals. Indicatively,
o review of existing relevant literature on: structural deterioration, numerical modeling, behavior of concrete, masonry and structures, damage indicators and others
o study the behavior of structures and individual elements under static or dynamic loading conditions
o numerical simulation and finite element analysis of existing structures
• carry out theoretical development and possible field work
• contribute in teaching and supervision of student theses at the department
• some administrative tasks should also be expected

The following qualifications are required

• master’s degree or equivalent, which corresponds to 300 ECTS e.g. 5-years diploma, in Civil Engineering/Structural Engineering/Earthquake Engineering
• background in the analysis and design of concrete or masonry structures
• ability to use finite element modelling packages such as Diana, Abaqus or similar
• programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or similar will be an advantage
• experience in publishing academic works in conferences and journals is an advantage
• fluency in both written and spoken English

The PhD position presupposes admission to a PhD program approved by the Department of Civil Engineering and Energy Technology. The PhD study plan for the PhD fellowship period is required to be completed, approved by the supervisor and acknowledged by the PhD host institution within 3 months after commencement of the position.

• Non-Scandinavian candidates must document their English skills. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) Minimum scores are:
o TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test) 92 (Internet-based test)
o IELTS: 6,5 with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
o CAE/CPE: Grade B or A

Remuneration

The salary for the position is set in accordance with the Norwegian State Salary Scale, position code 1017, salary NOK 449 400 – 472 300 per year. By law 2% of the salary is deducted as to the Norwegian State Pension Fund. The position adheres to the Norwegian Government’s policy that the national labour force should to the greatest possible extent reflect the diversity of the population.
